It depends greatly based upon airline and routing (i.e. connection in the USA versus Europe). One of the quickest routes is via United/South African Airways from Houston to Jo'Berg via Washington. The total travel time is just under 21 hours. You can figure that a nonstop/direct flight from the USA east coast to South Africa will be 14-16 hours in the air. Hope this helps!

There aren't any non-stop flights from Houston to South Africa so you have to change planes somewhere. For example, Houston to New York (JFK) or Washington (IAD) is about 3 hours, and South African Airways flies non-stop from those cities to Johannesburg (JNB). The flights from JFK and IAD on SAA are over 17 hours long. Delta flies non-stop to Johannesburg from Atlanta (over 19 hours) and Houston to ATL is about 2 hours of flying. You could also fly non-stop from Houston to Europe (ex. London, Paris, Zurich), which would be 8 to 9 hours of flying. Then Europe to Johannesburg non-stop would be about 11 hours of flying. The flights via South African Airways tend to be the least expensive.

If you were to get a direct flight it would be approx. 15 Hrs 58 Min. You can get flight times for airports all over the world at https://www.jets.com/

As stated above, the SAA flight from DC to Dakar to Johannesburg (and whatever airline you like to DC) is the fastest. You can take whatever airline is cheapest to get to Dulles. You'll spend just under 20 hours in the air, and with connections it expands to 22. The only reason I know this comes from my retired parents, who made the trip last October. The flew Continental to Dulles, and South Africa Air the other two legs.

Approx. 21 hours plus lay overs of 5-6 hours, depending on which airlines you take.
