Which airlines program? Many of them are changing due to the financial issues the airlines are having. I belong to American Airlines AAdvantage program. With them, you need 25,000 miles to get a round trip ticket (restricted fare, i.e. the kind that you use or lose based on a specific flight) for anywhere within the continental US that AA flies. If you want a more flexible ticket or to fly first class that will require more miles.

Check with the airlines web sites. Each airline has their own millage requirements for flights. Example Delta has a low of 12,500 to 30,000. Continental has a low of 20,000 to 50,000. In order to use Miles you have to earn them first. That can be done by flights on the airline you need to use.(NOTE to build miles faster you need to stay and fly with ONE airline). Credit cards linked to certain airlines. Credit cards that give you miles(or points) to transfer and use on any airline. If you join a Frequent Flyer program using their web site will give you other ways to earn miles for the program. Example: hotel stays, car rentals, cruises, flower shops, partner airlines, and purchases at certain stores Continental(the program I use) has two supermarkets you can use to get miles. Almost forgot you get half to NO credit for flight miles using the online places like Travelocity, Orbits, Expedia etc.... to book the flights You did not say what airport in Michigan. Continental and Delta has direct non stop flights in the low $200 from Detroit to Houston. United has connections with their flights from the same airports. Two flights I am taking in October from Newark(EWR) to Vegas(LAS) is 2227 miles each way and the second is Newark(EWR) to Rio de Janeiro(GIG) changing planes in Houston(IAH) is 6431 miles one way. See how the miles add up. That is 4,454 miles for the Vegas flight and 12,862 for the RIO flight. 17316 total miles for both flights. Now with Continental doing double miles credit right now (sign up needed) that is over 34,000 for two flights.

about 18 hours on the shortest flights, as most flights stop in San Francisco for a refueling or transfer before departing to Beijing.

My family and I went from Washington, D.C. to London on British Airways and they served chicken for dinner, yogurt and fruit for breakfast, and pretzels/peanuts for snack. They also had water, juice, soda, tea, and coffee to drink. Have fun and take earplugs if you are sleeping!

It tends to be the standard chicken or beef/fish Fayre. A good trick to avoid the standard conveyor belt food is to order a special meal. Most airlines offer different styles of vegetarian or vegan meals, Kosher, Halal, Dairy free and so on. Those meals are normally prepared on a far smaller scale and tend to be slightly better. Also they often are loaded last, so you have your meal first while it is still hot. I always order a vegetarian meal. Speak to you Travel agent about it or contact your airline.
4 :
Find a nice deli in the airport.

Things that are factered in to the price of a flight are length of stay, advance ticket purchase, season, day of week that you book, day of week that you fly, time of flight, non-stop or stop over, etc. Currently the dates of 9/29, 9/30 and 10/6 show fares are dropping. The current rates are $246 and rising. The link is interesting and very helpful.
